My friend Wayne, a Memphis based Interior Decorator, believes rooms should be decorated in layers.
For clients, he wants to place the basics, whether those are pieces they already own or pieces he finds for them. After that, he prefers they accessorize and tweak on their own over the years, gathering accessories and mementos that mean something to them. He'll help if needed, but he wants the room to reflect the client's taste, not his. He says he's never understood why clients would even want someone else to choose their personal objects.
Though there's nothing like the thrill of the hunt, part of the fun of collecting is displaying your treasures. Keep collections together for the most impact, and have fun finding new ways to arrange them in your home.
